We've all been there, spending half the morning scraping ice off the windscreen before you sit, wait and pray for it to warm up inside so that you can feel your fingers again, before you embark on your journey.

You will also be able to relate to getting in your car on a hot summer's day and immediately whacking the air-con on to cool down. Whilst your cooling and heating system ensures a more pleasant driving experience it is also integral to providing optimal performance from a number of key components under your bonnet.

Getting the cabin to a temperature that keeps you toasty in winter and cool in summer is the easy bit. Where your cooling and heating system matters most is ensuring that a number of important moving parts remain within safe temperature parameters.

Keeping your car running efficiently requires you to understand the temperature gauges on your dash as these will be the first warning sign of any potential issue. The general rule is if the gauge remains central everything is okay. If the gauge veers to the right or left (too hot or too cold) it is a sign of an issue which could prove expensive to repair.

Now you understand why your cooling and heating system is important we'll now provide you a number of tips to help you avoid any potential headache:

Coolant Levels

Monitoring your coolant levels is one of the most important tasks you can do to maintain your cooling and heating system. Coolant helps all of the working components to remain at a constant, comfortable temperature to achieve optimal performance.

Check your coolant levels by consulting your coolant reservoir as well as other locations that are likely to get very hot such as the clutch and brake systems.

Radiators

The radiator controls the temperature of your car by circulating either cold or warm air throughout the engine system so it is important that it is well maintained.

We recommend adding antifreeze to the water in your radiator to ensure that your engine starts easily even on the coldest of mornings.

Intercoolers

If your engine is turbocharged a significant amount of air is needed to cool the engine system to prevent overheating. An intercooler helps to cool the air before it hits the engine, often much below the temperature of a regular engine.

If you have recently upgraded your standard parts to performance parts and have placed extra demand on your existing engine we recommend that you also fit the necessary cooling parts to prevent overheating.
