The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) – the motor industry trading body – has announced a seven-year high for UK car production in the first half of 2015.

Reports show that 793,642 cars were built in the period, up 0.3% from the same period last year. This means that on average three cars a minute were produced in this given time period. Further information showed that in June alone the number of cars produced increased by 5.4% vs a year ago.

Export demand has been one of the driving forces for increased production. The Nissan plant in Sunderland is one of the largest UK vehicle manufacturing plants and has been one of the chief beneficiaries of increased international demand for vehicles.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT reported ”This success has been built on significant industry investment and has also relied on a positive relationship with government, essential if the industry is to maintain its international competitiveness,”

Whilst the UK export market continues to grow making great strides the same cannot be said for the domestic market. In June demand for UK cars dropped by 7.1%.
